Glass Facts

It’s not just the frame of a window that determines its energy efficiency. While the frame is a major factor, the glass is the most important feature in determining the energy efficiency of windows. Low-e glass is so called because of the low-emissivity film that coats each pane. We recommended low-e glass as it provides many benefits to our customers.

  • Low-e glass allows light to shine into the home but redirects heat back to its source. During the summer, the heat is redirected back outside. During the winter, it’s redirected back into your home.
  • While light enters the home through Low-e glass, harmful UV rays are blocked. This can help to prevent fabrics from fading, and protect artwork and other light-sensitive items.
  • Low-e glass eliminates the annoying condensation that can collect on your windows during cold weather.

Argon-filled glass is another way to make sure that your windows are highly energy efficient. In this case, the air between the two panes of glass is filled with argon gas, which greatly boosts the windows’ energy-saving performance.

It’s In the Numbers

Choosing quality Montgomery County energy-efficient windows isn’t difficult when you know how to interpret the numbers:

  • U-Value:  Measures a window’s heat loss resistance
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): Measures how much heat enters through glass
  • Air Leakage: Describes how much air will enter through a square foot section of window

U-values range from 0.2-1.2 and SHGCs range from 0-1. In all three criteria, a lower number is better.
